The Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu missed another practice Wednesday because of his injured left knee ligament and he himself doesn’t expect to play this Sunday’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.
Polamalu is “encouraged” by an MRI test he had on Tuesday, but he doesn’t anticipate practicing this week. Asked if he needs a week of practice before playing again, he said, “I would think so.”
The five-time Pro Bowl safety has missed nine full games and most of two others with separate ligament injuries in his left knee. He hasn’t played since the opening series against the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 15, though he has been working out in anticipation of a return. But he said he hoped to play Jan. 3 in the regular season-ending game in Miami.
Without the safety wearing No.43 Troy Polamalu jersey, the Steelers defense has lost leads in the fourth quarter six times, and recovered to win only one of the six games. Polamalu leads the Steelers with three interceptions despite playing only three full games all season.

Roethlisberger said he should not have played
The Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger now has been convinced that he should not play while still having symptoms of concussion, after having some conversation with teammate Hines Ward, who questioned earlier this week why Roethlisberger did not play last Sunday’s loss to the Ravens because of concussion and apologized for the remarks later.
“He reached out to me and I told him I was just hurt more than anything else,” Roethlisberger said Thursday. “You know, we got over it, moved past it and now we’re preparing.”
He himself was even shocked when he put on his Steelers jersey but was told by Coach Mike Tomlin that he would not play before last Sunday’s game. But after spending some time considering the reasons for the benching, he now understands the necessity of the move. So it was no wonder why Ward was so frustrated with the loss to say unfriendly of Roethlisberger without knowing that a team doctor recommended Roethlisberger not to play because of post-concussion headaches.

Steelers did not have safety Clark play against Broncos for his health
Two years ago, safety Ryan Clark was so near to death while he was playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the Denver Broncos that the team did not want to risk his life again on the same field this Monday night.
Instead, the Steelers had ten-year veteran Tyrone Carter and rookie Ryan Mundy split snaps in place of Clark. And Clark himself went onto the field without wearing Steelers jersey, about two and a half hours before kickoff. He ran several times from one sideline to the other like having warm up but would not play the game.
Steelers Coach Mike Tomlin said that he and the team did not want to risk Clark’s health or bring worries to other players and Clark’s family members.
On Oct. 21, 2007, Clark was playing against the Broncos in Invesco Field when a rare blood disorder was aggravated by playing in high altitude. His season ended after having spleen and gall bladder removed during separate operations following the game.

Steelers RB Mendenhall missed practice with flu-like symptoms
The Pittsburgh Steelers running back Rashard Mendenhall’s status is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns because he is ill and has to be kept away from practice facility with flu-like symptoms.
The first round draft pick of last year took over the starting job from Willie Parker during Sept. 27 game against the Cincinnati Bengals after the Parker injured his left big toe. He ran 165 yards against the San Diego Chargers and 77 yards against the Detroit Lions.
Since Parker has been back from the two-week layoff caused by the toe injury, it is hard to say who will get the majority of the carries on this Sunday’s game against the Browns. According to offensive coordinator Brue Arians, Mendenhall is expected to return by Friday, and the team will decide on how to split playing time between Parker and Mendenhall on Sunday.
