Redskins are trying to retain QB Campbell with highest possible tender

According to latest reports, the Washington Redskins have offered restricted free agent quarterback Jason Campbell a first-round tender of about $3.1 million, that will most likely cause other teams to think more carefully about signing away the quarterback and thus the Redskins will have the chance to keep him in Redskins jersey.

Campbell has started 52 games in his five seasons with the Redskins. He has his best statistical season last year, but the team struggled and finished 4-12. New Redskins coach Mike Shanahan had said that the team would like to retain Campbell but would not guarantee him with the starting job, indicating that Campbell would have to compete for the starting job with other quarterbacks after playing as starting quarterback in Redskins jersey for the past 3 1/2 seasons.

The Redskins are expected to announce their full slate of tender offers Thursday, one day before the March 5 deadline for free agency. And Campbell, who has said that he only wants to stay as starter, still has the right to negotiate with another team but it’s unlikely that there is any team who is willing to give up a first-round pick for him.

Redskins want to retain QB Campbell

Although the Washington Redskins are still planning to use a high draft pick to get a new quarterback, they won’t just let quarterback Jason Campbell take off his Redskins jersey for new job elsewhere. New Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan has told Campbell to return for 2010 season.

"The plan is that I’m going to be here," Campbell told ESPN on Thursday. "(Shanahan) told me that he liked how I’d handled everything over the past couple of years and the whole conversation was real positive."

The Redskins offensive line was considered to be one of the worst in 2009 season and Campbell was often criticized for not throwing downfield. He was sacked 43 times, third-most in the NFL. However he still managed to complete a career-high 64.5 percent of his passes with 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions.

Redskins coach Shanahan plans to hire Romanowski

The Washington Redskins new coach Mike Shanahan is looking for a qualified strength and conditioning coach for the team, and his No. 1 choice is Bill Romanowski, a former NFL player but was known for taking steroids and HGH during his 16-year NFL career.

Romanowski played for Shanahan in the Denver Broncos jersey from 1996 to 2001. After retirement, he has been running a nutritional supplement company. Romanowski said last year that every team should have a full-time nutritionist on staff.

"I’d have literally a full-time person mixing up protein shakes every day," Romanowski told the Associated Press. "The business is football, which is having fast, strong, explosive players."

Shanahan is also planning to draft a quarterback with the team’s No. 4 overall pick of draft and it seems that Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford or Notre Dame’s Jimmy Clausen is on top of the coach’s list.

Redskins G Williams will miss season finale

The Washington Redskins starting right guard Mike Williams has been confirmed not to put on his Redskins jersey and play the team’s last game of the season because of a torn muscle in his foot.

It’s the latest in a series of injuries to offensive linemen for the Redskins, who are 4-11 heading into this weekend’s game against the San Diego Chargers. According to Redskins Coach Jim Zorn, starting safety Reed Doughty has a high ankle sprain and probably will be listed as doubtful against the Chargers.

And there are still more injuries in the team, but are less serious.

In other injury news from Washington’s 17-0 loss to the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday, linebacker Rocky McIntosh’s back spasms improved, and offensive lineman Stephon Heyer’s right knee was better. Wide receiver Devin Thomas did footwork drills Monday and will try to play this weekend, after missing last Sunday’s game with a sprained ankle.

Redskins head coach Zorn is considering quitting

After being asked by the Washington Redskins to give up all of his offensive play-calling duties, hade coach Jim Zorn seemed unhappy with the move. According to Hall of Fame receiver Steve Largent, Zorn’s good friend and former teammate while they were wearing Seahawks jerseys, Zorn was considering quitting his job instead of handing play-calling responsibilities to recent hired consultant Sherman Lewis.

The Redskins have struggled mightily while starting 2-4 this season, but Largent believes the team's problems aren't of Zorn's doing and placed blame on Redskins owner Dan Snyder and management. He took Super Bowl-winning coach Joe Gibbs as example. Gibbs did not succeed under Snyder from 2004 to 2007, going 30-34 in his second stint with the team.

The newly hired consultant Lewis will call plays for the first time Monday when the Redskins play against the Philadelphia Eagles. And Largent predicted that there would not be great results for the Redskins.
